Texting and rap songs may save endangered languages

Youth in Mexico and the Philippines are using local, endangered languages in their texts and rap songs, which helps strengthen the use of these languages. Hauve is a language spoken by about 15,000 people in Tehuantepec, while Filipino teens use Kapampangan to send text messages.

The “Endangered Voices” project, by National Geographic, gathered videos of young people rapping in endangered languages. According to National Geographic, more than half of the 7,000 world’s spoken languages may disappear by 2100.
